Constant work in progress (both me and this website)

Octopus

Being called a “creative octopus” is the best compliment I’ve ever received.

Really. It’s on LinkedIn.

I’ve been a creative my entire life, but have only had the job titles to prove it for the past 13 years. If selling double-battered fried fish with a TV commercial that mimics a famous scene from The Big Lebowski is creative, then I’m definitely creative.

I have a degree in design, but my love for words resulted in a freelancing copywriting affair, which then resulted in marriage. We’ve been happily together for 12 years, but I still get drinks with design every once in a while to catch up.

I have a resume you can look at about where I’ve worked, but this is where I get to tell you about me being an octopus, remember?

I’m an extrovert at heart, and people and connection are what I value most. Of course, that all went to hell in the year of our “ugh”, 2020. This is (mostly) how I got into cycling. I used two wheels to physically and mentally escape from the insanity occurring on our planet. Then, when the weather got bad, I got a Peloton. Moving is important to me. Moving means I’m progressing, growing, learning. Sitting still is difficult for me—in many ways.

I sing in a cover band called Blind Venetians. My original college major was vocal performance. Music was my first love and as many do, fizzled with time. But I reconnected with her later in life (yes I’m giving music the she/her pronoun) and we’re back to being very close.

I used to do stand up comedy and improv, but my schedule was slowly taking over my life. A high point was performing in the 2020 SF Sketchfest with my sketch troupe, ALL CAPS.

I have a gap in my resume where I freelanced for 18 months. That’s because I quit my advertising gig to pursue my lifetime #travelgoals. The kids say YOLO, I say YOYO: You’re Only Young Once. Trust me, I could not live how I did back then at this age. I had a third-life crisis last week for christ’s sake. But I regret nothing and it truly changed my entire worldview, perspective, and life. I wrote about it here.

My sticky octopus hands (wait how cool would that be if Octopi had hands…whoa) can’t keep themselves off of adventure. I am a “yes, and” person (something improv taught me that always stuck) and am constantly seeking experiences that allow me to learn, grow, and better myself. (Or worsen myself. Not every night that starts with a four margaritas ends well…but I’ll take my chances.)

Previously, I was a senior brand writer at Zendesk, and the Lead Brand Copywriter at Figma.

If you’re reading this, hiiiiii! I have like, two tentacles empty-handed. Let’s grab a drink, brunch, or make a playlist together. Don’t worry—I can multitask.
